Before the modern navigation trips, in the age of sail ships and long distance navigation voyages, food then, as now, was directly related to health. One of the greatest threats to health, in the age of sail ships, on long sea voyages was scurvy, a potentially fatal disease cased by a deficiency of vitamin C, normally sourced from fresh fruit and vegetables. However, this was also a common complaint among the poor labourers on land in winter, when fresh food was scarce. In the age of the sail ships, safe and healthy provisions were crucial for the success of the adventure. Aliara was a tin cup measurement for the crew’s daily ration of wine. Our aliara is made in small and precious quantities as a tribute to this tradition. Because the long navigation voyages Captains needed to operate around the world and a number of entities made a huge effort to find a cure for scurvy, and to avoid deseases on long distance voyages and many remedies were tried, ranging from the infamous sauerkraut to extract of malt and a cup of wine.
