Our wines invite you on a journey through all of Chile’s terroirs, from the Elqui Valley in the North to Cauquenes in the South. Few wineries can offer such a voyage with this singular objective: find the region that allows each variety to find its full expression and essence, and discover the complete range of wines that Chile has to offer.
Since the rediscovery of Carménère (Grande Vidure) in 1994 at one of Viña Carmen’s vineyards in the Alto Maipo valley the variety has become a historical milestone for the world’s wine-making industry. For years, Carménère (Grande Vidure) extensively cultivated in its original area of Medoc, Bordeaux, was a variety thought to have been extinct after having been infected by the phylloxera aphid plague, originally native to eastern North America, in the mid-19th Century. Large-scale winemakers brought the vine to Chile before the emergence of the phylloxera aphid plague in Europe and it remained hidden in the Chilean countryside amongst Merlot vines, nobody knew it was Carménère. Once the variety was unearthed, Carmen became the driving force behind the development of Carménère (Grande Vidure) in Chile and launched its first variety bottle in 1996: blended with Cabernet Sauvignon and labeled as a Grande Vidure, an old synonymous of Carménère.
Carmen Grande Vidure Reserve wines are the highest expression of their respective grape varieties and reflect their adaptation to the best chilean terroirs. Multidimensional yet balanced, the wines are packed with character and complexity, yet have subtle notes to engage the nose and palate. From low yielding single vineyards, Carmen Grande Vidure Reserve wines are aged for 10-12 months in French oak barrels, elevating every experience to a special occasion. Carmen style seeks harmony, liveliness and expression from Chile’s most valuable asset – its fruit. Carmen pay attention for ripening, sun exposure and vineyard sustainability to produce wines that are crisp, balanced and vibrant and do not tend toward excess and pair well with all kinds of dishes.
